New Delhi, Jan 16, 2015: Did you ever want popular Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif as the president of India? Well, you almost had a backer.
Known for his controversial statements, Justice Markandey Katju, former chairman of the Press Council of India, raised eyebrows by posting on his personal blog on Tuesday that he wants Katrina Kaif to be the next president of India. A day later, he retracted his statement on Facebook saying that his blog post was “purely in a lighter vein” and that if he had offended anyone, he would like to apologise for it.
In his post, Justice Katju wrote that he was inspired by the election of Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović as the president of Croatia. He went on to surmise that he was in favour of electing beautiful women on all posts.
“This is because politicians will promise the moon, but not do anything for the public welfare. So since you must have someone, why not vote for a beautiful face ? At least you will get some momentary happiness looking at her face in the media,” he wrote.
He did not stop there. He went on to add that he wants to make Kaif the next president of India, but only on the condition that “she sings ‘Sheela ki Jawaani‘ on her Inaugural.” The reference was to a popular song that was picturized on Kaif in the film ‘Tees Maar Khan.’
His post on Facebook attracted huge response with several users rallying around to condemn his statement and others having a laugh about it. Justice Katju even responded to a user’s comment remarking that he found Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, a union minister, better looking than the HRD minister Smriti Irani.
Today morning, he shared a video of a bhajan saying that he has decided to post only bhajan kirtans from now on on Facebook after the flak he drew over the earlier post.
In the past, Justice Katju has courted controversy by saying that 90% of Indians are idiots and that he disapproved of homosexuality calling it “all humbug and nonsense.”
