Davangere, May 27, 2024: As many as 25 people were arrested in Davangere district for vandalising a police station and throwing stones at cops alleging a custodial death. According to police, all the arrested accused are residents of Channagiri and neighbouring towns.
The unrest began when a mob entered the Channagiri police station and started pelting stones, alleging that a man named Adil, who had been called in for police questioning, had died inside the station. The mob accused the police of killing Adil.
The 30-year-old Adil was detained on May 24 for his alleged involvement in gambling activities in the district. According to initial reports, the police stated that Adil’s death was due to low blood pressure, although post-mortem reports are awaited.
The police noted that there were no injury marks on Adil’s body and that he had collapsed within five minutes of being inside the station.
Davangere SP Uma Prashanth confirmed the arrests, stating, "We have arrested 25 people in connection with yesterday’s Channagiri case and have sent them to judicial custody".
Prashanth also said that the case will be handed over to the Crime Investigation Department (CID).
As the news of the man’s death spread, his relatives along with a large group of people went on a rampage, damaging police vehicles and hurling stones at the police station, alleging that he died in custody.
To disperse the crowd, police resorted to a lathi charge. Several police personnel were injured in the attack and more than five police vehicles were damaged in the stone pelting by the mob.
