Haveri, Mar 15, 2023: Stones were pelted at Muslim homes and a mosque in Karnataka’s Haveri district during a procession by Hindu outfits and Kuruba community organisations, leading to communal tension in the area on Tuesday. Police detained 15 people and brought the situation under control.
Members of the Hindu outfits were carrying out a bike rally with a statue of revolutionary Sangolli Rayanna on Tuesday. When the procession crossed a Muslim neighbourhood, a few miscreants pelted stones at houses and a mosque.
Haveri Superintendent of Police (SP) Shivakumar told India Today that the bike rally was peaceful but a few miscreants pelted stones when they came close to a mosque.
"There was police deployment during the procession and immediately the situation was brought under control," Shivakumar said. The SP added that on March 9, a similar rally was disrupted by a few members of the Muslim community. That might have triggered the people, he said.
SP Shivakumar said since police officers were deployed during the procession, it would be easy to identify the culprits.
