Karnataka farmers protest over Cauvery water’s release into Tamil Nadu

Bengaluru, Aug 31, 2023: Farmer unions staged a protest in Karnataka’s Mandya on Wednesday against the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC)’s order to release 5,000 cusecs water from the river daily into Tamil Nadu for 15 days.

The farmers were joined by Dharshan Puttannaiah, an Independent MLA. Despite being supported by Congress, he expressed outrage against the CWRC’s decision and said the protests would go on all night.

"We are protesting against the decision to release 5,000 cusecs of water from the river Cauvery daily. There is a meeting on Friday and we have to wait and watch what will happen next. They should release water based on facts," Puttannaiah said.

Meanwhile, farmers argued that the authorities announced the release of River Cauvery water into Tamil Nadu without understanding the situation. The protests took place near Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) dam.

They demanded that the water release be stopped immediately, warning that the protests would continue until the water flow stops.

Farmers also staged a protest on the Bengaluru-Mysore highway, and members of the Bhoo Tayi Horata Samiti were also present.

Defending the CWRC’s decision, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar had earlier said that it ordered the release of 5,000 cusecs of water every day though Tamil Nadu had demanded releasing 24,000 cusecs every day.

"Our people have fought it vigorously. We have explained our situation (to the CWRC). The technical committee too presented the case. Our officers too have explained the exact situation," he told reporters in Mysuru.

He said he would speak to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and has already spoken to officers about the prevailing situation. He said Karnataka was earlier asked to release 10,000 cusecs of water every day, which was reduced to 5,000 cusecs in view of less rainfall.

Tamil Nadu Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan had earlier said the combined storage capacity of the four dams in Karnataka is 114.571 tmc ft (thousand million cubic feet) and it has 93.535 tmc ft storage, which is about 82 per cent.
