Karnataka government to set up fact-check unit to curb fake news

Bengaluru, Aug 22, 2023: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramiah on Monday gave a green signal to set up a fact-check unit to crackdown on fake news, fake emails, and cybercrime in the state.

 

The Chief Minister, who chaired a high-level meeting along with Home Minister G Parameshwara and IT/BT Minister Priyank Kharge, said, "Fake news that threatens democracy and disrupts the health of society should be controlled, and all necessary rules and laws will be framed, including the establishment of a fact-check unit in the state."

The Chief Minister also said that fake news leads to polarisation in society and many use this to get electoral benefits.

"A three-step measure has been approved to curb the spread of fake news by detecting the syndicates who create it and punishing them," the Karnataka CMO mentioned in its post on X (formerly Twitter).

Senior police officer and Inspector General of Police, Intelligence, Labu Ram IPS will be part of the team. The IT/BT department would support formulating laws while the fact-check unit would reportedly function under the Home Ministry department.

A team will be formed soon and they’ll monitor social media platforms to detect fake news syndicates and book cases against them.
