Karnataka govt says first Omicron patient ’escaped’, orders probe

Bengaluru, Dec 03, 2021: The Karnataka government on Friday said the first Omicron patient "escaped" the state. The state government had on Thursday said the patient had presented a negative Covid test report from a private lab.

The health ministry informed on Thursday about the first cases of Omicron varient in India, both of which are from Karnataka.

Karnataka revenue minister R Ashok said: "We’ve lodged a complaint with High Grounds police to understand what went wrong at Shangri-La Hotel that the person escaped."

The minister said the state government is also trying to trace and test all 10 people who had gone missing from the airport. "By tonight all 10 people, who had reportedly gone missing, should be traced and tested," added the minister.

The first patient, a 66-year-old, came to the state from South Africa on November 20 and left India seven days later, according to data shared by the Karnataka government.
Details of the passenger’s travel history:

1. Travelled from South Africa on 20/11/2021 with a Negative report from South Africa and he was screened & tested at KIA Bangalore.

2. Upon his arrival, he checked into a hotel on 20/11/2021 and the test reports were positive.

3. The UPI-IC doctor visited the hotel for Physical triage and found him asymptomatic. He was advised to self-isolate at the hotel.

4. On 22/11/2021, his test samples were collected and sent for Genomic Sequencing through BEMP.

5. The patient took a self investigation at a private lab on 23/11/2021 and the report was negative.

6. There were 24 primary contacts. All were asymptomatic, tested and all reported negative.

7. On 22nd and 23rd, UPHC team collected samples from 240 secondary contacts and all tested negative.

8. The above person checked out at midnight on November 27 and took a cab to the Airport. He then traveled to Dubai.
