Karnataka’s move on marriage registrations, rare praise from BJP’s Tejasvi Surya

Bengaluru, Feb 16, 2024: Karnataka has rolled out a facility for the online registration of marriages in the state. It was launched by state Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda on Thursday (February 15), with the aim of making marriage registration hassle-free for applicants. Interestingly, the announcement was praised by BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, who called the same a "welcome move".

 

"Welcome move by Krishna Byre Gowda for making the marriage registration process digital and citizen friendly, enabling newly-weds (to) receive certificate at (the) comfort of their home," Tejasvi Surya, who is also the national president of BJP Yuva Morcha, tweeted.

He further wrote that the move will tackle the issue of "lakhs of marriages" going unregistered due to the "hassle of visiting government office for a certificate".

The facility was launched on a pilot basis at the Malleswaram sub-registrar office in Bengaluru. A video of the same was shared on X by Krishna Byre Gowda. In the post, the minister said that couples can obtain the certificate from the comfort of their home by providing wedding invites, videos and Aadhaar authentication.

"Now one doesn’t have to visit the sub-registrar’s office for registering their marriage under (the) Hindu Marriage Act...One more step towards transparency and service delivery," he wrote on the micro-blogging site.

The application process for registering marriages under the Special Marriages Act has also reportedly been made online. Although couples willing to register their marriage under the Act need to visit the sub-registrar’s office for registration after providing all required documents online.

However, the offline registration of marriages will continue for couples who are unwilling to give Aadhaar authentication online.

In the video shared by Krishna Byre Gowda on X, he was seen conducting a marriage registration online. As per reports, two such registrations were made on Thursday.

Earlier this month, the Karnataka government approved the amendment of the Hindu Marriage Registration Act to simplify the process and make way for online registrations.
