Kejriwal’s new pitch ahead of Gujarat polls: 300 units of free electricity if voted to power

New Delhi, July 21, 2022: Making a pitch for the assembly elections in Gujarat, scheduled to be held in December this year, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal promised that his party will provide free electricity up to 300 units per month if voted to power in the state.

 

Kejriwal was addressing people at a town hall meeting in Surat on Thursday. This is his second visit to the state this month.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor guaranteed an uninterrupted power supply without any cuts. "I am giving you a guarantee. If you find any fault later, you are free not to vote for AAP in the next election. We will fulfill all the guarantees once we come to power in the state," he said, adding that all pending electricity bills issued before December 31, 2021, will be waived.

Following the announcement, Kejriwal came up with a new reply to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ’rewari’ remark on political parties handing out freebies to voters.

"Some people are talking about ’rewari’ (sweet)..when ’rewari’ is distributed among the public for free, then it’s called ’prasad’ (devotional offering). But when it is given for free to your own friends and ministers, then it is ’paap’ (sin)," ANI quoted Kejriwal as saying.

Earlier, the AAP chief had said that as the people of Gujarat were fed up with 27 years of BJP rule and wanted a change, his party will share its agenda on what it plans to do for them, in the next few weeks.

On Saturday, PM Modi said that efforts are being made to bring in the culture of collecting votes by distributing ’free rewari’ (sweets) in the country. Warning people against the rewari culture under which votes are collected by promising freebies, the PM had said that this could be’ very dangerous’ for the development of the country.

“This Revdi culture is very dangerous for the development of the country. Those with Rewari culture will never build new expressways, new airports or defense corridors for you. Together we have to defeat this thinking, remove Revdi culture from the politics of the country," he had tweeted.
