The resolution, moved by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, was passed unanimously without any amendment. The Congress-led Opposition did not suggest any change in the resolution.

In the resolution, Vijayan said, “The name of our state in the Malayalam language is Keralam. States were formed based on language on November 1, 1956. That day is also observed as Kerala formation day. The demand for a united Kerala for all Malayalam-speaking communities has been strongly raised right from the days of the freedom struggle. However, the name of our state in the First Schedule of the Constitution has been written as Kerala”.

“This Assembly is unanimously requesting the Union Government to take immediate steps under Article 3 of the Constitution to change the name of the state to Keralam. The Assembly also requests that the name of the state should be changed to Keralam in all the languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution,” added the chief minister.

In fact, Kerala residents already call the state Keralam, and the Bharatiya Janata Party’s state unit uses “BJP Keralam” as its account handle on X, formerly known as Twitter.
