New Delhi, Dec 30, 2023: The Kerala government has filed an amended petition with the Supreme Court seeking directions for the Governor to clear pending bills immediately.
In the amended petition, the state has sought the Supreme Court to lay guidelines on the conditions under which the Governor may reserve bills presented to him for the consideration of the President, withhold his assent or return them to the state assembly.
The amendment was made to the writ petition filed before the top court earlier.
The government has sought the Supreme Court to interpret the phrase "as soon as possible" in the first provision of Article 200 of the Constitution on the timeline applicable to the disposal of the bills presented to Governor Arif Mohammed Khan.
The state stressed in the petition that it should be declared that the Governor failed in fulfilling his constitutional duties. The state government also requested that the governor should be instructed to take an immediate decision to dispose of the pending bills.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is likely to meet Governor RN Ravi on Saturday evening. This came days after the Supreme Court asked Stalin and Ravi to discuss pending bills and other issues.
