THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DH News, May 20 2017: A 23-year-old girl cut a man’s penis off while resisting his attempt to rape her, in Thiruvananthapuram late on Friday night.
The culprit, identified as Hari aka Gangeshananda Theerthapada (54), claims to be a spiritual healer. He is admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram and his condition is stable after a surgery, sources in the hospital said.
According to the girl’s statement recorded by the police, the culprit had been sexually abusing her for about five years.
The incident happened at the girl’s home in Pettah. Preliminary reports said Hari made sexual advances at the girl who, in retaliation, assaulted him with a knife.
Hari, an inmate of the Panmana Ashram in Kollam, is learnt to have been known to the girl’s family for five years and had earlier conducted pujas at her home. Pettah police have registered a case, also invoking provisions under the Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The police have taken the girl’s mother into custody in connection with the incident.
A hospital spokesperson said Hari was brought to the hospital at about 12.40 am on Saturday, with 90% of his penis severed. An emergency surgery was conducted by doctors in the urology and plastic surgery divisions.
