Kerala, July 4, 2024: Five people were taken into custody on Wednesday for the alleged murder of a woman who went missing 15 years ago from Mannar in Kerala’s Aluppuzha district after cops found her human remains, officials said.

Acting upon a tip-off, police examined a septic tank in her husband’s house and found substantial evidence confirming the murder.

The woman, identified as Kala, went missing from her house in Mannar in 2008-2009 when she was 27, officials said. No missing person report was filed at the time. However, the police launched an investigation a few months ago after receiving information at the Ambalappuzha police station about her disappearance

Anil Kumar, Kala’s husband, has been identified as the prime suspect in the case. Alappuzha SP Chaitra Theresa John stated that Anil is currently working in Israel and that steps have been initiated to bring him back to Kerala.

John mentioned that personal issues appear to be the motive behind the murder. Five individuals are currently in custody, with arrests expected to be recorded soon.

Initially, rumours circulated that Kala had taken her jewellery and eloped with someone else. Kala and Anil Kumar, who hailed from different communities, married despite familial opposition and had a son together.

Anil has since remarried and is living in Israel.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
