Less than 50% turnout in Bangalore - BBMP polls

Bangalore, March 28 : In the Bruhat Bangalore Mahangara Palike (BBMP)elections held on Sunday, less than 50 per cent poling was recorded. Polling was peaceful and except for minor incidents. However, a large number of names of Voters were missing. This led to heated arguments in many wards.

 

 

Election to BBMP was due in 2006, but is held now. It was purposefully delayed and the High court had enforce order to conduct the election. 1337 candidates from all parties and independents were contesting in 198 wards. BJP is contesting in 197 while Congress in 196 and JDS 195 wards


The opposition parties alleged that the police have been seen partisan with the BJP candidates and was helping them out of the way. It is alleged that the cops were harassing voters and many of the voters went back without voting.  The cops caned supporters of opposition party workers when they staged a demonstration at Sunkadakatte in the Kottigepalya ward.  They alleged that M Srinivas, BJP MLA was distributing cash asking the electorate to cast their votes for his son S Venkatesh Babu. In spite reporting, no action was taken against the MLA. Congress and JD (S) blocked the road for a sometime seeking action against the BJP MLA.
