New Delhi, Aug 22, 2014: The Supreme Court on Friday told the government that it is concerned about the vacant post of Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha. The apex court said that LoP is very important component under the Lokpal law. The Centre has been given four weeks time to reply. Supreme Court
The Supreme Court asked the Attorney General Mukul Rohatagi to clarify on two points. They are:
1 How the Government wishes to make Lokpal Act workable.
2 LoP has to somebody. And if there is no LoP, how to move forward in such a situation.
The Supreme Court made it clear that if the government fails to resolve LoP issue, the court may give a larger interpretation to the term LoP so that it may include leader of the largest party or leader of the larger group.
The Attorney General also informed the Supreme Court that they are in the process of reviewing various provisions of Lokpal Act and the Government is planning to amend it too.
