Low pressure likely to form over Bay of Bengal on June 11

Mangalore Today News Network

Kolkata, Jun 09, 2021:      As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), a low pressure area is likely to form over North Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood around June 11, catalysing the advance of southwest monsoon into West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Sikkim.

Under the influence of the low pressure, most of East India and adjoining central India will likely witness fairly widespread rainfall activity from June 10 onwards.

Odisha will likely see very heavy rain between June 10 and June 12.

The weather department further added that due to the strengthening of southwesterly winds from Bay of Bengal to Northeast and adjoining East India, a cyclonic circulation will be formed over central Assam and neighbourhood, including West Bengal and South Chhattisgarh.

These areas will likely witness widespread rainfall activity over the next four-five days.

Under favourable conditions, a low pressure in the sea may intensify into a depression, then into a deep depression and then into a cyclonic storm.

However, the weather department said there is a low (1-25 per cent) to moderate chance (51-75 per cent) of a depression forming in the next 120 hours.

Moreover, not all depressions turn into a cyclone storm.

Recently, India has witnessed two cyclones, one on the West coast and one on the East coast.

The “extremely severe cyclonic storm” Tauktae had hit the West coast of India, crossing the Gujarat coast in Saurashtra between Diu and Una. Under the influence of cyclone Tauktae, Maharashta, Goa, and Gujarat had witnessed heavy rain and wind.

Last month, a depression over the Bay of Bengal had intensified into the cyclonic storm Yaas that had crossed the West Bengal and Odisha coasts as a "very severe cyclonic storm" and had caused widespread havoc in West Bengal and Odisha.
