Maharashtra, December 28, 2024: The Maharashtra police have detained 13 Bangladeshi nationals in an anti-terrorism operation, as part of a statewide crackdown on illegal immigration.
Seven men and six women were detained for residing in India allegedly without valid documentation. Based on intelligence inputs, the operation was conducted in coordination with local police in Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Solapur.
In 24 hours, the authorities scanned specific routes and areas suspected of facilitating illegal entry. Preliminary investigations showed that the detainees entered India using forged documents, including Aadhaar cards, to pass off as citizens and were found to be in violation of the Foreigners Act, 1946, the Passport (Entry into India) Act, 1950, and the Passport Rules, 1967.
Officials stressed on the seriousness of such cases citing potential national security risks. “This is not just about illegal immigration; it is about the misuse of forged documents to bypass the legal system, which poses a threat to national security," a senior police officer said.
According to the police, the detainees told them they had procured fake identification documents with the help of local residents. Authorities are now investigating the network responsible for creating these forged documents, while local police in Thane are now incharge of further investigation in the case.
The state police said it was fully committed to tackling illegal immigration, and stressed on the importance of inter-agency cooperation and community vigilance in identifying suspicious activities.
“We urge citizens to report any illegal activity they observe, as it can play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and integrity of our state," the official said.
Officials further said steps will be taken to deport the detainees following due legal process. The crackdown is a warning for those involved in the nexus of aiding illegal immigration, they said.
They also said the state government is highly focused on border security and illegal immigration. With surveillance and enforcement measures tightened, authorities aim to deter more such incidents, they added.
