Maharashtra Govt deploys heavy security ahead of MVA protest over collapsed Shivaji Statue

Mangalore Today News Network

Mumbai, Sep 1, 2024: The Eknath Shinde government in Maharashtra has deployed heavy security in anticipation of a large protest in Mumbai organized by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) over the collapse of a 35-foot statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji at Malvan in Sindhudurg.

The ruling BJP has questioned the need for the protest and is planning a counter-march to challenge the Opposition’s demonstration. A significant police presence has been established at the Gateway of India, which has been closed to tourists due to concerns over maintaining law and order.

Prominent leaders of the INDIA bloc in Maharashtra, including Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, NCP (SP) leader Sharad Pawar, and state Congress president Nana Patole, are set to participate in the Opposition rally. The march will start from Hutatma Chowk in the Fort area and proceed to the Gateway of India.

The Opposition has dubbed its protest the "Jode Maro" rally, which translates to "hit with footwear." The Shiv Sena (UBT) has called for people to join the march to "awaken the pride of Maharashtra." Meanwhile, the Sharad Pawar faction of the NCP has stated that there is no forgiveness for "corrupt Shivdrohis" (traitors to Shivaji), and the state Congress has said the march aims to "teach a lesson" to those who performed shoddy work, engaged in corruption, and insulted Shivaji.

The collapse of the Shivaji statue, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi just eight months ago, has led to a significant political controversy in Maharashtra. The project, managed by the Navy in collaboration with the state government, has resulted in the arrest of the structural consultant and contractor, who face charges including attempt to murder, culpable homicide, and actions endangering life and safety.

In response to the political fallout, Prime Minister Modi has apologized for the statue’s collapse, stating, "Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not just a name or a king. For us, he is our deity. Today, I bow my head at his feet and apologize to my deity. I also apologize to the people hurt by the collapse."
