Mumbai, Aug 16, 2023: The Maharashtra government is considering adopting the ’Kerala model’ of utilising Artificial Intelligence (AI) cameras to enhance traffic enforcement. Vivek Bhimanwar, IAS and Transport Commissioner of Maharashtra, recently visited Kerala to gain insights into the deployment of AI cameras for monitoring traffic violations.
During his visit, he held discussions with Kerala Transport Minister Antony Raju and expressed interest in implementing a similar system in Maharashtra.
Vivek Bhimanwar explored the AI Camera District Control Room and State Control Room, and held talks with senior officials at the Transport Commissionerate. He praised the AI camera project as a potential model for the entire country.
Kerala’s AI camera initiative’s efficacy has also captured the attention of other states. Transport department representatives from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu visited Kerala in June and July to study the implementation of these AI cameras. Minister Antony Raju emphasised that such interest from other states validates the success of the AI camera project.
As part of the "Safe Kerala" project, approximately 726 AI cameras have been installed across the state. These cameras primarily detect traffic offenses such as riding a two-wheeler without a helmet, not using a seatbelt, exceeding the passenger limit on a two-wheeler, using mobile phones while driving, and violating red lights.
Notably, the AI cameras recorded a staggering 20 lakh traffic violations between June and July alone. Furthermore, the deployment of these cameras has contributed to a significant reduction in road accidents in Kerala, as stated by the Transport Minister earlier.
