Kolkatta, May 2, 2021: Mamata Banerjee has led the incumbent Trinamool Congress (TMC) to a massive win with the party winning as many as 126 seats so far and leading in 92 other seats but the party supremo has lost her own seat in Nandigram to Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Suvendu Adhikari. The saffron party has so far won 32 seats and leads in 40 seats in what has turned out to be a bipolar contest and massively improving its 2016 tally of 3 seats.

Both the TMC and BJP have posted strong gains at the cost of the Congress-Left Front-ISF alliance which has put up an extremely poor show, leading in just two seats.

on’t worry for Nandigram, for struggle you have to sacrifice something. I struggled for Nandigram because I fought a movement. It’s ok. Let the Nandigram people give whatever verdict they want, I accept that: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee

Suvendu Adhikari, the former close aide of West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee, defeated her in a high-stakes electoral battle. Adhikari won the Nandigram seat in 2016 as a TMC candidate. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in December 2020, after ending his two-decade-old relationship with Trinamool Congress (TMC). Addressing an election rally ahead of the Assembly polls, Adhikari had asserted that he will defeat her or quit politics"
