Hubballi, Jan 01, 2024: The police in Hubballi have arrested a 50-year-old man who was involved in the riots that took place after the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992.
The accused, Poojary, was 20 years old when the riots took place in Hubballi.
Poojary wasn’t arrested so far as his case was termed as "long-pending", according to the police.
According to Renuka Sukumar, the Police Commissioner of Hubballi-Dharwad, this is a routine drive by the police.
"This has been a routine drive where we try to crack long pending cases. In 2006, this case was termed as long pending. In the last three months, we have cracked 37 such cases and this is one of them. The accused has now been sent to judicial custody. He was involved in riots in Hubballi after the Babri demolition in Ayodhya," said Renuka Sukumar.
Babri Masjid, a 16th-century mosque in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya, was demolished by right-wing Hindu activists on December 6, 1992. The site is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram, a prominent deity in Hindu religion.
The aftermath of the Babri Masjid demolition witnessed protracted legal battles over the ownership of the disputed site, which ultimately culminated in the Supreme Court’s verdict in November 2019, allotting the land for the construction of a Ram temple while also providing an alternate plot for the construction of a mosque.
