Bangalore, Jan 11: Kruthika Devi had to pay a huge price for her love as broken promises and false marital hopes led to not just an end to her relationship, but life as well. The 22-year-old from Chamarajanagar district in Karnataka was brutally murdered on the night of December 21 by her boyfriend N. Pramod Kumar (25), who burnt her alive in a manhole.
According to the police, Kumar, a businessman from the same town, befriended other girls though he was engaged to another woman. He met Kruthika and promised to marry her. They were in a relationship for almost two months and when Kruthika pestered him for marriage, he began avoiding her.
Since December first week, Kruthika pleaded him to marry her and that’s when he allegedly decided to get rid of her. They came to Mysuru in a car during the same week and stayed in a hotel.
On December 21, Kumar and Kruthika drove to a secluded area in Jayapura on Ring Road on the city’s outskirts. An argument ensued between the two and Kumar allegedly hit her with an iron rod. When Kruthika fell unconscious, he carried her and dumped her in a manhole and drove off. However, he returned within a few minutes and poured petrol into the manhole and set Kruthika on fire.
The next day, morning walkers found the charred body of the unidentified girl and immediately alerted the police. As Kruthika was not from Mysuru, the police were unable to establish her identity. When they made inquiries in the neighbourhood, they stumbled upon a CCTV footage of a speeding car on the night of the incident and the flames emanating from the manhole.
"We then analysed the call logs of December 21 night in the locality and rounded up 20 suspects.
When Pramod Kumar turned up, we found out that he was lying to us. The car that he used matched the one on the CCTV camera footage. He later confessed to have committed the murder," said Mysuru Superintendent of Police Abhinav Khare.
Pramod had hoped to get away because neither he nor the victim was from Mysuru. The police have registered a murder case.
