Trying to evade arrest, the youth threatened police at gunpoint but ended up with injuries when cops opened fire in self-defence. The youth died in a Bangalore hospital on Monday morning.

Ramu, 27, had been living with maternal uncle Muniyappa, 65, for three years and wanted to marry his daughter, said AB Sudhakara, circle inspector, Kolar rural police.

It all began on Sunday midnight when Muniyappa and wife Venkatamma were asleep. Ramu, who was sleeping outside the house, went to his uncle’s room and urged him to accept the marriage proposal. This angered Muniyappa and an argument broke out between the two. Within minutes, Ramu locked the room from inside and began assaulting the couple.

Venkatamma, who sustained serious head injuries, somehow managed to get away but Muniyappa couldn’t. Ramu killed him on the spot, and dumped ragi and flour sacks on the body to hide it. Police, meanwhile, arrived at the scene of crime, asking Ramu to surrender. But he refused to come out of the house. Cops lobbed tear gas shells, but even that was of no use.

Finally, around 5.30am, Ramu came out and assaulted head constable Narayanaswamy with a chopper. He also snatched a rifle from a cop, and threatened the police team. In self-defence, another constable opened a round of fire. Sensing further trouble, circle inspector AB Sudhakara fired three rounds at Ramu, injuring him. He was rushed to Jalappa Hospital and later shifted to Victoria Hospital in Bangalore, where he succumbed to injuries. Narayanaswamy and Muniyappa’s wife Venkatamma are recovering at Kolar Hospital.
