Guwahati, Jun 02, 2021: At least five persons of a family have died after consuming wild mushroom they collected from a nearby forest in Meghalaya.
The incident took place in a village under Mairong Civil Sub-Division in West Khasi Hills district.
According to reports, the mushrooms consumed by the family are known as ‘Tit-Kber’ and are found in the nearby forest area. They are locally consumed by the villagers.
However, eight members of a family fell ill after consuming the mushrooms. The villagers immediately rushed them to the hospital, but five of them passed away.
West Khasi Hills district Superintendent of Police (SP) Herbert G Lyngdoh told India Today TV over phone that all the deceased persons are from a family hailing from Lumdam village.
“The villagers had immediately admitted the sick persons at Shillong civil hospital, where five persons died,” Herbert G Lyngdoh said.
The deceased persons were identified as Korbenshon Mawnai, Barisha Mawnai, Storshon Mawnai, Smilinda Mawnai and Stebenshon Mawnai.
The eldest daughter and youngest son of the family have survived, while the father is still undergoing treatment at hospital.
