Srinagar, March 24: Militants today attacked a police party in a busy market area of Sopore town in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, leaving a civilian dead and a policeman seriously injured.
Superintendent of Police, Sopore, Imtiyaz Hussain, told PTI, "Militants opened firing on a police party while they were clearing the traffic jam in Iqbal market area in Sopore."
Constable Kishor Kumar was hit by a bullet in the neck while an elderly civilian was killed in the attack.
"The militants snatched the service rifle of the injured cop before fleeing from the scene," Mr Hussain said.
The officer said the policemen exercised maximum restraint to avoid civilian casualties.
This is the third militant attack in Kashmir in less than two weeks. Three days ago, militants attacked a BSF convoy in the outskirts of Srinagar, leaving a jawan dead and two others injured.
On March 13, Lashkar-e-Taiba militants had attacked a CRPF camp in Srinagar, killing five of its personnel. Two militants were killed in retaliatory action, while police arrested four persons including a Pakistani national in the course of investigations into the attack.
