President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation of Modi as Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers. Murmu requested Modi to continue in his post till the new government assumed office.

If the NDA forms the government, Modi will be the second leader to retain power for a third term after former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi chaired a meeting of the Union Cabinet to take stock of the Lok Sabha election results and also discussed matters related to the formation of the next government, sources said.

The meeting at the Prime Minister’s residence began at 11.30 am. This was the last meeting of the Modi 2.0 Cabinet and Council of Ministers.

Meanwhile, senior leaders of the NDA started arriving in Delhi for a meeting of the alliance that is likely to take place at 4 pm. The NDA leaders are likely to deliberate on the details of government formation.

JD(U) leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Telugu Desam Party president Chandrababu Naidu, who is set to become the next Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, will attend the meeting.

Sources said the BJP’s allies have already started sending their demands to the BJP for the Modi 3.0 Cabinet. The JD(U) has demanded 3 Cabinet seats, the Eknath Shinde Shiv Sena faction has sought one Cabinet and two MoS berths.

The Chirag Paswan-led Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is likely to press for one Cabinet and one state minister post. HAM(S) chief Jitam Ram Manjhi wants a Cabinet post in the new government, sources said.
