Modi vs Kejriwal in 2024? Poster pitching AAP chief as PM candidate shows up

New Delhi, Feb 11, 2020:   As the counting of votes polled in the high-stakes Delhi Assembly election started on Tuesday morning, a poster on ’Arvind Kejriwal versus Narendra Modi’ contest in the 2024 General Elections was spotted at the AAP office in Delhi.

 

An AAP supporter was seen outside the party office in Delhi holding a banner pitching Arvind Kejriwal as a PM candidate for Lok Sabha elections in 2024. The banner read ’2024: Kejriwal vs Modi’.

The Delhi Assembly election in Delhi was also a ’Narendra Modi vs Arvind Kejriwal’ contest with tussle between issues of national interest and those of local relevance. Delhi is only a half state and has only 70 seats and yet, election saw the involvement of top national leaders, including the prime minister.

Arvind Kejriwal has been the fiercest political opponent of Narendra Modi since 2013 after the AAP prevented the BJP from forming government in Delhi.

In 2014, Arvind Kejriwal took on Narendra Modi, the then prime ministerial aspirant, in the Lok Sabha election from Varanasi. In 2015 Delhi Assembly election, Narendra Modi and Arvind Kejriwal launched no-holds-barred attacks on one another as the BJP and the AAP engaged in bitter electoral fight. Kejriwal, however, returned as the Delhi chief minister with the AAP winning 67 of 70 seats pocketing 54 per cent vote share.

In 2019, PM Modi was seeking second consecutive term but the AAP was a major force in Delhi. Kejriwal’s party drew a naught in the national capital territory securing only 18 per cent vote share. In five of seven constituencies, the AAP finished third behind the Congress. In three of these constituencies, the AAP candidates forfeited their deposit. In contrast, the BJP had won all seven seats with 57 per cent vote share.
