Monsoon to hit Kerala coast tomorrow: IMD

mansoon The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday that the onset of the Southwest Monsoon in Kerala was “very likely” by Thursday.

According to a IMD weather inference bulletin, the monsoon has “further advanced” into some parts of the Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin region and some parts of south-west Bay of Bengal.

“In view of the strengthening of cross-equatorial flow and deepening of westerlies over the south Arabian Sea and development of feeble off-shore trough along Karnataka-Kerala coast, onset of monsoon over Kerala is very likely by June 9,” the bulletin stated.
The IMD had predicted the onset of the south-west monsoon in Kerala on Tuesday, with a model error of plus or minus four days.

The IMD predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall till Thursday in Kerala and coastal Karnataka. The IMD has also predicted thunderstorm accompanied with squall in Telangana and heavy rainfall in parts of Rayalaseema and south-interior Karnataka on Wednesday.

The Meteorological Centre in Thiruvananthapuram has issued a warning to fishermen in the wake of prediction of strong winds along the coast.

Meanwhile, pre-monsoon showers regained pace in parts of Kerala on Tuesday. Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode received intermittent showers throughout the day.
