Data shared by the Bureau of Immigration under the Ministry of External Affairs suggests that in 2017 - the period before Covid - 4.54 lakh students flew abroad for education, whereas in 2022, the number rose to 7.50 lakh. The government said around 1.2 million students are studying abroad across various streams. The number dipped to 2,59,655 in 2020 when the pandemic hit the world.

However, the specific data on Indian students pursuing medical courses abroad was not made available by the government. Concerns were also flagged about the medical students studying in Ukraine before the war broke out.

“The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued public notices conveying its no-objection to the Academic Mobility Program (AMP) offered by Ukraine.

The AMP is the temporary relocation (for the period of conflict) to other universities applicable to the countries mentioned in the public notice. Around 170 students have enrolled themselves on Academic Mobility Program, as per government data.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), a total of 3,964 Indian medical students have got admissions under Academic Transfer Programme.
