Mumbai Mother Flings Baby To Death Out Of Hospital Window

Mtoday news / IndiaTV

Mumbai, Oct 26: A mother of twins was caught on camera early on Tuesday morning throwing her baby girl out of a bathroom window at KEM hospital, Mumbai and then raising an alarm that the infant had gone missing, reports Mumbai Mirror.

The one-and-a-half-month-old girl was being nibbled by a rat and crying her lungs out when hospital security staff found her almost half-an-hour later in a drain just outside the toilet window of ward no. 2.

The girl, who had half her head bitten off by rats, was rushed to the emergency ward and put on a ventilator. However, she could not be saved.

The mother, identified as Deepika Parmar, a resident of Dahisar, has been booked by the Bhoiwada police under Section 317 of the IPC (exposure and abandonment of a child under twelve years of age by a parent or a person taking care of him/her).

Deepika has confessed to the crime and she will be arrested once her other baby, a boy, is fine and does not need her by his side.

Deepika delivered the twins on September 11 at Ameen Hospital in Dahisar. The premature babies were underweight, both weighing 1.2 kg.

As the babies did not gain weight more than a week after their birth and also developed breathing problems, Deepika took them to Bhagwati hospital on October 20. Doctors at Bhagwati referred the babies to KEM the same day.

None of the doctors or nurses who were treating the twins at KEM recollect having noticed anything amiss with Deepika. “She was absolutely normal. I did not notice anything that could have indicated she was up to something so sinister. But it is obvious it was planned,” said a nurse requesting anonymity.

CCTV footage of Tuesday morning shows Deepika scanning the ward, checking if anybody is watching. It’s 4:41 am.

At 4:50, she swaddles one of the babies in a bunch of clothes and is seen entering the bathroom.
At 4:52, she returns empty handed.

At 4:54, she puts a dupatta around her, steps out of the ward, and starts screaming that her child has gone missing.

CCTV controller, Sanjay Tiwari, was among the first to reach the ward on hearing the commotion. “She told me she had gone to wash her clothes when the child disappeared. I checked the clothes lying by her bedside...they were not wet,” he said.Sawant then asked a security official to stand guard near Deepika and went to check the bathroom. “I heard a child’s cries. I could make out the sound was coming from outside. I took a security guard with me and rushed out.” What Sawant saw was shocking. The baby was lying in drain outside with a rat nibbling at her.

It’s still not clear why Deepika tried to get rid of the girl. However, it is possible that the recent media coverage over a child going missing from V N Desai Hospital may have given her the idea to raise a false alarm of kidnapping.

Her husband, Manish Parmar, was not in the ward when the incident occured. “I don’t understand why Deepika did this. I think it’s her own health and children’s illness that may have stressed her,” he said.

Dean Dr Sanjay Oak agrees stress could have played a part. “Post-delivery, women undergo postpartum depression. Deepika went through the same. It’s strange she showed no signs of remorse for what she had done. We tried to save the baby girl, but there wasn’t enough time,” he added.

The hospital will provide Deepika psychological help before the police takes over the case.

Oh my, this is terrible! But what about family? Surely, the lady had a family and someone ought to have stayed with her in the hospital. I have a feeling this is stress; still, what she did is inexcusable and she can\’t escape punishment just because she was stressed out.
