The University Grants Commission on December 29 had issued a circular, asking three lakh students in 30,000 institutes across the country to perform Surya Namaskar in front of the Tricolour under the Amrit Mahotsav celebrations to mark India’s 75th year of Independence. “To commemorate the Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, the 75th anniversary of Independence Day, the federation has decided to run a project of 750 million surya Namaskar in 30 states, involving 30,000 institutes and 3 lakh students from January 1 to February 7,” the circular signed by UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain said.

“The government is trying to impose the traditions and culture of the majority on others. This is unconstitutional,” General Secretary of the organisation Maulana Khaled Rahmani said.

“The government must immediately roll back the diktat and promote secular values in the country,” he said. Instead of issuing such directives, the government needs to focus on real issues such as inflation unemployment, etc, he added.
