New Delhi, Nov. 05: Sum Mang, a Myanmar-based kingpin of an international drug racket, has been arrested by Delhi Police, along with his two associates. Man, 46, used to transit Pseudoephedrine - a party drug - from Delhi to Myanmar via north-eastern states.

Mang’s associates have been identified as Sumit Kumar, 22, a resident of Delhi and Sunil Goyal, 51, a resident of Uttar Pradesh. Over 438 kg of ephedrine tablets worth Rs 50 crore were seized from the three accused.

The police said Sumit was running a ’narcotics drugs Pseudoephedrine cartel’ from Delhi to north-eastern states for further supply to Myanmar to prepare methamphetamine or crystal meth (ice) for rave parties.

"Ephedrine is generally used in cough syrups. It was first used to prepare ecstasy tablets in European countries about 40 years ago. These tablets were later brought to India and people developed an addiction for them," said a police official.

On the afternoon of October 31, the police got a tip off that Sumit, who is involved in the trafficking of Pseudoephedrine by train, would come at the New Delhi railway station at 5 pm to book the parcels of the illegal narcotic drug for Guwahati.

A team was formed and Sumit was held with 340 kg of Pseudoephedrine. After Sumit gave away Mang’s whereabouts, raids were conducted and Sum was held with 96 kg of drug from Vikaspuri.

Sunil was arrested on Thursday from Ramprastha with 2 kg of the same drug.

"Besides above recoveries, fake Indian voter Identity card and pan card of Sum Mang, one Maruti Ecco car, and mobile phones have been recovered. This drug was being sent to Myanmar to prepare methamphetamine - which is sold for $200 (Rs 13,000) to $650 (Rs 42,000) per gram all over the world and is use largely in rave parties," said Pramod Singh Kushwah, DCP (special cell).

CASE REGISTERED

A case under NDPS Act for illegally possessing the narcotic drug Pseudoephedrine has been registered.

These drugs have emerged as one of the main party drugs in Delhi and are consumed in the form of tablets.

The key material for manufacturing these tablets are variants of stimulants popularly known as ecstasy, speed, base, and ice in party drug circles.

Sources said these tablets can be taken orally and can also be smoked. But an overdose can damage the liver, and in extreme cases, even prove fatal.
