Mysuru: Tourists make a beeline for gushing twin falls at Shivanasamudra

MYSURU, August 11, 2019: Amidst the natural calamity of floods and rain fury that is battering large parts of the State, here comes an occasion to appreciate nature’s enthralling beauty as well.

The incessant rain and heavy discharge from the major reservoirs have helped the twin falls of Gaganachukki and Bharachukki — about 70 km from Mysuru and approachable via Malavalli from Bengaluru — reach their full splendour.

shivana samudra

A large number of people from Bengaluru, Mysuru, and surrounding areas thronged these two falls, also called as Shivanasamudra and ‘Bluff’, on Saturday. This was possible as the road leading to the falls has not been affected by the floods.

In anticipation of tourists’ arrival, authorities had stationed police personnel at vantage points to prevent them from venturing too close to the waterfalls and ensuring that they stayed at a safe distance.

The Gaganachukki and Bharachukki falls achieve their full splendour when the discharge from the two reservoirs — Kabini and the KRS located upstream — increases.

Flowing along a rocky terrain, the river splits into two to create an island that is called Shivanasamudra. The eastern segment of the falls is called the Bharachukki (Chamarajanagar district) and the western segment is the Gaganachukki (Mandya district) both separated by a few miles.
Mist draws crowds

The Cauvery plunges from a height of nearly 300 ft to create a mist that tourists throng to view.

The splendour of the waterfalls had attracted medieval travellers and the Mysore Gazetteer, edited by Hayavadhana Rao, quotes from the writing of Francis Buchannan who was liberal in its praise. Apart from the falls, the vast expanse of the Cauvery holds the tourists enthralled. Authorities expect the tourist flow to increase in the days ahead.

The combined discharge from both the Kabini and KRS reservoirs is expected to ensure a good volume of water in the falls for a few more days, and given that Monday is a public holiday, tourist footfall is also expected to increase.
