New Delhi, Oct 18, 2022: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday carried out raids at more than 50 locations in several states across northern India in an ongoing case against gangs and their nexus with terror groups.
The raids were conducted in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) to dismantle and disrupt the emerging nexus between terrorists, gangsters, drug smugglers and traffickers based in India and abroad.
Earlier, the NIA had conducted raids at 60 locations across India in connection with the case.
WHY IS THE NIA CONDUCTING RAIDS?
The NIA crackdown comes after two cases which were earlier registered at the Delhi Police were re-registered and a series of investigations into the nexus between gangsters and terror groups were launched on August 26.
Several gang leaders and their associates who are spearheading terror and criminal activities were identified and booked. It was revealed that these gangsters were not only operating from India but from abroad as well.
NIA officials said the gangsters were using cyberspace to publicise their crimes -- which include extortion calls to businessmen and other professionals -- to create terror among the public.
The NIA investigations also revealed that such criminal acts were not isolated local incidents and there was a deep-rooted conspiracy amongst terrorists, gangsters and drug smuggling cartels and networks, who were operating from both within and outside the country.
"Many gang leaders and members had fled from India and were now operating from foreign countries, including Pakistan, Canada, Malaysia, Australia," the NIA had said, the first time it carried out a mega raid against such gangs.
RAIDS AT GANGSTER’S HOUSE IN HARYANA
As part of the crackdown on Tuesday, the NIA raided the house of gangster Naresh Sethi in Haryana’s Jhajjar. The NIA team reached Sethi’s house at 4 am. The local police, including the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) also accompanied the NIA team.
Sethi’s family members were questioned and his property and bank details were investigated. The NIA team was at Sethi’s house for about five hours.
Naresh Sethi was involved in several criminal cases, including murder and ransom. He is currently behind bars in Delhi’s Tihar jail. He is also associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
