New Delhi, May 21: Indian political top brass on Monday observed the 21st death anniversary of the country’s seventh Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi.
President Pratibha Patil, Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi, who was the slain leaders’ wife, paid floral tributes at New Delhi’s ’Veer Bhumi’.
Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Vadra, who are the children of the late Prime Minister, were present at the venue.
With an objective to keep youths away from terror activities, Gandhi’s death anniversary May 21 is also observed as Anti-Terrorism Day in India.
Gandhi, who was India’s youngest PM at 40, was assassinated during a poll campaign on May 21, 1991 at Tamil Nadu’s Sriperumbudur.
He is remembered for modernizing India’s telecommunications industry, the education system, expanding science and technology initiatives and improving relations with the United States.
