Norway: Andhra couple arrested for reprimanding son for wetting his pants

Hyderabad, Nov 30: An Indian couple belonging to Andhra Pradesh has been arrested by the Norwegian authorities for allegedly reprimanding its seven-year-old son for wetting his pants. V Chandrasekhar, a software professional from Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district and working in Oslo, and his wife Anupama were arrested by Oslo police for allegedly trying to discipline their son, their family members in India claimed.

 

The case had come to light earlier this year after the child told his teachers about the incident. The teachers later alerted local authorities, who placed the child in the care of child services for a month. The couple, however, got back the custody of its son after the authorities did not find any evidence of abuse.

The parents were recently served a notice to appear in a local court and arrested after the hearing on Monday. It is, however, still not clear why and on what charges, they have been arrested. Meanwhile, their family in Andhra Pradesh wants the Indian government to intervene into the matter.


Chandrasekhar’s nephew V Sailender claimed that the arrest has come nine months after the child complained to his teachers that his parents were threatening to send him back to India for his acts. "My uncle had no idea about the case registered against him initially. He came to Hyderabad along with his wife and children in July and went back to Oslo in the last week of October. Then he was served a notice to appear before the authorities along with his wife," he said.

"My aunt also went to Oslo on November 23 and the couple appeared before the authorities concerned. On November 28, we were informed by my uncle’s neighbours in Oslo that they were arrested and remanded," Sailender said.

The boy was found urinating in the school bus which was reported to his father, who in turn "threatened" the child that he would be sent back to India if he repeated that again, Sailender said, adding the boy was also found bringing toys from school. "We are yet to get complete details on Chandrasekhar’s arrest," he said.

He said the boy was under the custody of Norwegian child protection authorities for some time in February to study his behavioural pattern. "Later, they found that the child was alright but ’hyper-active’ and handed over him to parents," he said. When contacted, a spokesperson of TCS, where Chandrasekhar is employed, confirmed the arrest but refused to comment on the issue, saying that it was a personal matter of the employee.

New Delhi: Taking a note of the arrest of an Indian couple belonging to Andhra Pradesh by the Norwegian authorities for allegedly reprimanding its seven-year-old son for wetting his pants, the Indian Embassy in Oslo has sought details of the case from the couple’s friends. Sources added that the embassy is also in touch with the couple’s lawyer and is ready to provide necessary consular assistance to it.

Speaking to CNN-IBN, Sailender urged the Indian government to intervene into the matter. "We are requesting the Indian government to have a word with the Embassy of Norway and ask them to find out what is exactly going on in Norway and under what charges my uncle and aunt have been arrested," he said earlier in the day.
