New Delhi, Oct 21, 2022: Senior Congress leader and former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil stoked controversy following his statements on jihad during a book launch in Delhi on Thursday. He said the concept of jihad is mentioned in Gita, adding that Lord Krishna gave lessons on jihad to Arjuna during the Mahabharata war.
Speaking at the launch of Congress veteran and former Union minister Mohsina Kidwai’s biography, Patil said, "It is said there’s a lot of discussion on jihad in Islam. Even after all the efforts, if someone doesn’t understand the clean idea, power can be used. It’s mentioned in Quran and Gita."
"Shri Krishna gave lessons of jihad to Arjuna in a part of Gita in Mahabharat," he added.

Shivraj Patil was the Union home minister from 2004 to 2008 and the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996. He was Governor of the state of Punjab and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015.
Congress leaders such as Shashi Tharoor and Digvijaya Singh, along with Farooq Abdullah, and Sushil Kumar Shinde, also attended the event.
Meanwhile, the BJP reacted strongly to the jihad remarks, with its spokesperson Shehzad Jai Hind accusing the Congress of "Hindu hatred" and opposing the existence of Lord Ram.
He tweeted, "After AAP’s Gopal Italia and Rajendra Pal, not to be outdone in Hindu hatred and votebank politics, Congress’ Shivraj Patil says Shri Krishna taught jihad to Arjun!"
"Rahul Gandhi also said things about Hindutva; said LeT less dangerous than Hindu groups; Digvijaya blamed 26/11 on Hindus," he further said, adding that "Hindu hatred" is a deliberate ploy before Gujarat elections to polarise a votebank.
