Now, meat ban in Bengaluru on Ganesh Chaturthi

New Delhi, September 15, 2015: The ban on meat is spreading with Bengaluru being the latest city to ban it on Ganesh Chaturthi, which falls on September 17.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has issued a press statement calling for the ban for a day. Also read: Eggs hurled at trader’s shop for supporting meat ban on Facebook

Authorities in Bengaluru said it was a routine ban every year similar to the one on Gandhi Jayanti, which is observed on October 2. Also read: Haryana fifth BJP-ruled state to ban sale of meat

The ban in India’s IT City follows a bitter row over it in Mumbai where the High Court had to intervene to limit the ban to two days.

Earlier, the Mumbai municipal body had imposed a four-day ban on September 10, 13, 17 and 18. While September 10 passed with huge protests, both among the masses as well as the social media networks, now the slaughter houses will remain shut only on September 17, the start of the 10-day Ganeshotsav.

The BMC move came after the Bombay High Court expressed its strong reservations over the ban especially since Mumbai is a cosmopolitan city. Also read: The big thorn in the flesh

Already covered by a state-wide ban on beef since April, the BMC’s meat ban followed an eight-day ban imposed in the adjoining Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation, and quickly followed by others like Navi Mumbai and Nashik.

Meanwhile, over the past couple of days, several states have also imposed similar ban on meat for varying periods.
