Balasore, June 9, 2011: The nuclear-capable and indigenously developed medium-range surface-to-surface ballistic missile Prithvi-II was successfully test-fired from the launch complex III of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-sea, about 15 kms from here, today.
ITR sources said the user trial of the missile was carried out by the personnel of the Strategic Forces Command(SFC) with logistic support from the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) at 0905 hours.
The missile can carry conventional as well as nuclear warheads and has a range of 350 kilometers. It is one of five missiles being developed under the Integrated Missile Development Programme.
Prithivi-II is capable of carrying a payload of between 500 kg and one tonne, including nuclear weapons. The missile has already been inducted by the armed forces and is handled by the army units attached to the Strategic Force Command’s special group.
