Kolkata, Oct 08 2019: TMC Lok Sabha member Nusrat Jahan on Monday hit back at the Muslim cleric who criticised her for celebrating Durga puja.
The Muslim cleric had slammed Nusrat Jahan for participating in Hindu rituals and said the actor should change her name and religion because she is defaming Islam and Muslims by her actions.
In response, Nusrat Jahan said that the cleric had no right to ask her to change her name. She said that it was not a matter of religion but that of celebration.
"Those who have not given me my name...do not have any right to ask me to change it," Nusrat Jahan said.
She also said, "This is not a matter of Hindu or Muslim...My message to clerics...relax a bit...happy puja."
Nusrat Jahan also slammed the clerics for giving a political twist to the matter. "This is a time of celebration...not about politics only," Nusrat Jahan said.
Nusrat Jahan, the first-time MP from Bashirhat, has been in the line of fire of the Muslim clergy for sporting symbols of Hindu matrimony like mangalsutra and sindur’ since her marriage to a Hindu entrepreneur Nikhil Jain earlier this year.
On Nusrat Jahan’s comeback to Muslim cleric’s criticism, Nikhil said, "I think these people have always been given a reply by Nusrat...and they will keep getting the same."
Clad in a saree and sporting sindur, Nusrat Jahan had attended Durga puja celebrations of Suruchi Sangha with her husband on Sunday.
TV channels showed her lip-syncing to hymns being recited by a priest, her eyes closed and hands folded in solemn prayer. She also beat a drum and danced joyously.
