Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 05, 2017: A middle-aged couple, resisting attempts to remove them from the police headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram where they had stood for hours, were dragged by cops. The woman fell, and had to be hospitalised, triggering protests.
Mahija and PK Ashokan were demonstrating at the police office to demand details of the investigation into the alleged suicide of their son, Jishnu Pronnoy, at his college in January this year.
"This should not have happened. But I have asked for a report with details of the circumstances in which it happened," said Loknath Behra, the top police officer about the action against the Ashokans.
Jishnu, an 18-year-old engineering student in in Thrissur, was found hanging in his hostel 280 km from the state capital. His friends and parents blamed repeated harassment by college authorities because he was critical of exam dates being frequently changed. College officials say the student had been caught cheating.
The police has filed a case against five college officials, accusing them of aiding the student’s suicide. One of the officials was arrested and then released on bail yesterday.
The student’s parents were reportedly told they could meet the senior-most cop, Loknath Behra, today, for an update on the investigation into his death.
