New Delhi, April 20, 2025: Remarks by BJP MPs Nishikant Dubey and Dinesh Sharma targeting the Supreme Court have sparked sharp reactions from the Opposition, with AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to curb attacks on the judiciary. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh accused the Centre of undermining the Supreme Court.
The BJP, distancing itself from the comments, labeled them as "personal statements" and stated they "completely reject" the views expressed by the MPs.
The controversy follows a recent Supreme Court judgment setting a three-month deadline for the President and Governors to clear Bills returned to the legislature.
Mr. Dubey criticized the court’s authority, claiming it was "crossing its limits" and suggesting Parliament should be shut if the judiciary overrides it. He accused the court of inciting religious tensions and overstepping its mandate, including on matters like the decriminalization of homosexuality and legislative decisions.
BJP leader Dinesh Sharma echoed similar sentiments, stating, "No one can challenge the President," and asserting the supremacy of the legislature and executive as defined in the Constitution.
The BJP leadership has reportedly asked the MPs to avoid making such statements, underscoring its stance of respecting institutional boundaries.
