Over 40 Delhi schools get hoax bomb call, accused demands $30,000 ransom

New Delhi, December 9, 2024: Delhi School Bomb Threat News: More than 40 schools in the national capital received “hoax" bomb threats via e-mail, prompting the school administrations to send the children back to their homes, Delhi Police said on Monday.

The police declared the threats as “hoax" after initial investigation in which they did not find anything suspicious.

The schools that received threats included RK Puram’s DPS, Paschim Vihar’s GD Goenka Public School, Mother Mary’s School, British School, Salwan Public School, and Cambridge School among others.

The threat mail received by the schools read, “I planted multiple bombs inside (school) buildings. The bombs are small and hidden very well. It will not cause much damage to the building, but many people will be injured when the bombs detonate. If I do not receive $30,000 I will detonate the bombs".

CM Atishi Reacts

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi took on the Centre over the law and order in the city stating that the Union Home Ministry, under which the Delhi Police functions, has filed in the “sole responsibility" it has been given by the people of Delhi for their security.

“After the daily incidents of extortion, murders, and shootings in Delhi, schools are now receiving bomb threats. The law and order situation in Delhi has never been this deteriorated before. The BJP-led central government has failed in its sole responsibility of providing security to the people of Delhi," Atishi posted on X in Hindi.

SOPs To Address Bomb Threats Ordered By High Court

On November 19, the Delhi High Court directed the Delhi government and Delhi Police to formulate a comprehensive action plan, including a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), to address bomb threats and related emergencies. The Court mandated that this task be completed within eight weeks.

The SOP should clearly outline the roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders—law enforcement agencies, school authorities, and municipal bodies—to ensure seamless coordination and effective implementation, the Court emphasised.

A bench led by Justice Sanjeev Narula, while hearing a plea filed by Advocate Arpit Bhargava, instructed the Delhi government and Delhi Police to collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including school representatives, municipal authorities, and other state departments, in drafting the action plan.
