Over 60,000 new cases take total to 31.67 lakh, death toll over 58,000

New Delhi, Aug 25, 2020: Coronavirus cases in India has crossed the 31 lakh-mark while over 58,000 people have died so far even as the country heads towards Unlock 4 from September 1. The government is planning to resume the Metro train services that have remained suspended since March. However, schools and colleges may not reopen anytime soon, even in Unlock 4. Government sources have also said that bars, which were so far not allowed to reopen, may be permitted to sell liquor over the counter for takeaway. Unlock 3, which saw the resumption of domestic flight and train movement, is nearing an end on August 31. The Unlock 4 guidelines is expected to be issued later this week. Meanwhile, coronavirus cases continue to peak in India with nearly 70,000 cases being recorded on a daily basis. On the other hand, students across the country have started protests after the education ministry said Joint Entrance Examination JEE-Main and the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) will be conducted in September as scheduled. Over 4,000 students observed a hunger strike seeking postponement of the competitive exams over the coronavirus situation.

India has recorded 60,974 coronavirus cases, taking the country’s tally to 31,67,323. Over the past 24 hours, India has also recorded 848 deaths, taking the death toll to 58,390.

Charges framed against 36 foreigners in Tablighi Jamaat case in Delhi

Charges have been framed and the trial is set to start against 36 foreigners from 14 countries for attending the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi’s Nizamuddin in March for allegedly being negligent and disobeying the government guidelines issued in wake of COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

Telangana reports 2,579 new COVID-19 cases and 9 more deaths over 24 hours. Total number of cases in Telangana now stand at 1,08,670 with 770 deaths. There are 23,737 active coronavirus cases now.

Fearing an even sharper surge in coronavirus infections with the opening of the school year in September, some Spanish regions moved Monday to impose new measures against the spread of the pandemic, including bans on large social gatherings. On Monday, when Spain’s Ministry of Health reported figures for the previous three days, the country added more than 19,000 new cases to its epidemic tally of more than 400,000 since the beginning of the pandemic. The figure is the highest in Europe.

The World Health Organisation on Monday cautioned that using blood plasma from COVID-19 survivors to treat other patients is still considered an experimental therapy, voicing the concern as a US boost for the treatment has many scientists afraid formal studies will be derailed. On Sunday, the US Food and Drug Administration authorised what’s called “emergency use” of the treatment under its special powers to speed the availability of promising experimental drugs during a public health crisis.

Mizoram government on Monday lifted the eight-day complete lockdown in the state capital area to contain the spread of novel coronavirus and the restrictions on movement of goods carrying vehicles. The complete lockdown in Aizawl municipal area had been imposed from 8 pm of August 16 to expedite contact tracing and facilitate random sample testing of persons who have high risk of exposure to COVID-19 infected patients.

Officials have said there is almost no possibility of allowing cinema halls to reopen from September 1 as it will not be commercially viable for filmmakers or cinema hall owners to operate following social distancing norm. As of now, among the prohibited activities are Metro rail services, cinema halls, swimming pools, entertainment parks, theatres, bars, auditoriums, assembly halls and similar places. Social, political, sports, entertainment, academic, cultural, religious functions and other large congregations are also likely to remain prohibited next month.

Metro train services in cities like Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai were suspended since March when the lockdown was first imposed. In Unlock 4, schools and colleges will, however, remain shut. Bars, which are so far not allowed to reopen, may be permitted to sell liquor over the counter for takeaway. States will, however, take the final call on reopening the rapid transport networks depending on the coronavirus situation there. The official said there will be no reopening of schools and colleges immediately, but deliberations are underway on whether to allow reopening of higher educational institutions such as universities, IITs and IIMs. Sources have said in the Unlock 4 guidelines, the central government will only mention about prohibited activities and the rest can resume
