According to a BMTC statement, the incident came to light at around 4.45 am when the bus driver, Prakash, 39, saw the bus on fire. The beat police, who spotted the fire, immediately informed the fire brigade but the bus conductor Muthaiah (43) did not survive. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and the police have taken up the investigation.

According to the driver’s statement, the bus was parked at the bus stand at around 10.30 pm on Thursday. While the driver slept in a room at the bus stand, the conductor chose to sleep inside the bus.

Muthaiah, a native of Bagalkot, was a permanent employee with BMTC since September 2013 and was working in depot number 31. He is survived by his wife Manjula and a 14-year-old daughter.

The bus, which was inducted into service in 2017, had reportedly covered 3.75 lakh km.
