Parliament adjourned second time in a row over Opposition protest on Adani case, Sambhal violence

New Delhi, November 27, 2024: Parliament did not conduct any business for the second day on Wednesday as the government refused to accede to the Opposition demand for discussion on Adani issue, Manipur and violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambal.

Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha witnessed no business except for laying of official papers on the table of the House, as Opposition MPs defied the presiding officers’ appeal to allow the functioning of the Houses, which were adjourned twice in the morning session. On Monday too, Parliament did not function while there was no sitting on Tuesday.

Parliment

Lok Sabha was first adjourned soon after convening at 11 AM as Opposition MPs raised slogans as they wanted the Adani controversy and the recent violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal.

When it reconvened, the MPs rushed to the Well of the House prompting BJP MP Dilip Saikia, who was in the chair, to adjourn the proceedings for the day. MPs like Manickam Tagore, Benny Behenan, Manish Tiwari, Shafi Parambil and Kodikkunnil Suresh submitted adjournment notices to discuss Adani issue and Manipur violence.

Rajya Sabha also witnessed a vociferous Opposition raising demands for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into Adani issue, Manipur and violence in Sambhal.

Soon after Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar rejected 18 notices seeking immediate discussion on issues, the Opposition MPs were on their feet protesting against his decision, which led to an adjournment till 11.30 AM.

"The Upper House needs to reflect and follow well-established traditions that ruling of the Chair requires reference and not cause differences. I have, in detail, given reasons why, in these situations, notices are not being accepted," Dhankhar said.

When the House reconvened, Opposition MPs were unrelenting and the House was adjourned for the day.

On Monday also, the Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned for the day during the morning session itself as opposition insisted on raising the issues related to the Adani Group.

There was no sitting of the House on Tuesday.

Both Houses will reconvene on November 28 at 11 am.
The Adani Group said on Wednesday that Gautam Adani, and his nephew Sagar have not been charged with any violation of the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) in the indictment that authorities filed in the New York court in an alleged bribery case.
