Pregnant migrant labourer delivers baby while walking home, walks another 150 km after delivery

Maharashtra, May 13, 2020:  Pregnant migrant labourer who was walking from Maharashtra to her village in Madhya Pradesh gave birth on the way. She rested for 2 hours after giving birth and then continued with the walk for another 150 kilometre.

According to ANI, the pregnant woman and her husband started their journey from Nashik in Maharashtra and were walking towards their home in Satna, Madhya Pradesh, IndiaToday reported.

 

She experienced labour pain on Tuesday during the long and arduous walk home. Her husband said, “After she gave birth, we rested for two hours and then we walked for at least 150 kilometre.”

Satna Block Medical Officer, AK Ray said, “We got to know that the administration at border arranged a bus for them, as they reached Unchehara we brought them here. All check-ups have been done, both mother and the baby are doing fine.”

In a similar incident, another pregnant migrant worker was forced to deliver her baby on the road as she walked home from Telangana to Chhattisgarh early in May.

The woman was travelling with her family from the Sangareddy district in Telangana to her native village Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh by foot.

While the government has started Shramik Special trains for migrant labourers to return home as the lockdown has brought their lives and livelihood in the cities to a halt, thousands are still struggling to board these trains.

With no options available, the poor migrants across states are still taking the roads to go back home. While some have managed to hire vehicles, some are climbing up trucks, tempos or riding cycles for hundreds of kilometre. Many others have resorted to walking the distance.

A group of 16 migrants from Madhya Pradesh, who were walking back from Maharashtra, were run over by a goods train last week when they fell asleep on the railway tracks after being exhausted of the long walk.

Another migrant labourer on his way home to Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda died onboard a Shramik Special train in Satna on Tuesday. The man was 34 years old.

Meanwhile, PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced a mega relief package of Rs 20 lakh crore for the revival of the Indian economy. This relief package is also expected to benefit the migrant labourers.
