President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurates Namma Metro phase 1

Mangalore Today News Network

Bengaluru, June 17, 2017 : President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday inaugurated the long-awaited phase 1 of the Bengaluru Metro.

The Namma Metro’s Sampige Road-Yelachenahalli stretch, which connects south Bengaluru with other parts of the city was flagged off in the presence of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Union Urban development Minister Venkaiah Naidu and Ananth Kumar, Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers.

With 40 stations dotting the network, the Metro expects about five lakh footfalls every day. The frequency of trains may go up to four minutes during peak hours from tomorrow.

Namma Metro’s Phase 1 has been delayed by more than six years due to various reasons, mainly lack of coordination between different agencies and political reasons. Those in the southern parts of the city have been dreaming of riding the Metro ever since the process of land acquisition started.

More importantly, it has been three years since the Yelachenahalli-National College stretch was completed. The delay in completion of the tunnel section between National College and Sampige Road became a major setback to the project.
