UK, Jan 09, 2020: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle - the Duke and Duchess of Sussex - have today announced that they plan to become financially independent from the Royal Family. It’s a move which some are speculating is tantamount to ’resignation’ from official public duty.
They have explained in an Instagram post, which went live on Wednesday evening, January 8, that the decision comes ‘after many months of reflection and internal discussion’ on the matter, Yahoo reported.
What is more, in the caption for the post, they explain that they intend to step back from their positions as ’senior’ members of the Royal Family, in order to re-evaluate their ’role within its institution.’
Speculation has been rife about the couple’s plans to split their time between the UK and Canada and the statement appears to confirm that this is indeed their intention, with it explaining that they now wish to commit their lives to both London and also North America. The reason that they give for this is that they intend their first born child - Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor, who is now eight months old - to grow up with an appreciation of ’balance,’ understanding the royal family traditions with a degree of distance.
The intention to decrease their presence at the forefront of the Royal Family and re-evaluate the scale of their public duties, comes mere months after 38-year-old Markle made an emotional plea for her psychological welfare, during a documentary, following dramatic and overwhelmingly negative tabloid scrutiny since her engagement to Prince Harry.
Although Forbes reported in 2017 that the British monarchy could be valued at approximately $88 billion, upon Meghan and Harry’s financial separation, this royal couple won’t necessarily feel the burden of losing access to the Queen’s coffers.
According to The Independent, the Duchess of Sussex previously had amassed a personal fortune of around £3.8 million, thanks to her acting and modelling career.
Prince Harry, for his part, has some funds to fall back on too. His net worth is estimated between $25 million and $40 million, accumulated from funds left in trust to him by his mother, the late Princess Diana, inheritance from the Queen Mother (that reportedly included her jewels), and his former salary as a captain in the British Army.
At the end of the lengthy Instagram post, the couple also reveal the launch of a new website, Sussex Royal, so those seeking further updates would do well to bookmark the page.
Without a great deal more information about their plans, it’s hard to say for sure what this will mean in terms of their public appearances, but it seems as though this has potential to be the biggest move away from the Royal Family since Edward VIII abdicated from his position as King in 1936, in order to be with he lover Wallis Simpson.
The Queen’s uncle, the Duke of Windsor abdicated on 10 December 1936, broadcasting a memorable farewell message by radio, before leaving the UK to marry Mrs Simpson in France. The couple lived abroad between France and New York until his death in 1972.
