Prophet row reaches Delhi, UP, Kolkata streets post Friday prayers; stones thrown, tear gas used

New Delhi, June 10, 2022: Massive protests have broken out in Delhi and Kolkata over the row over remarks about the Prophet which led to global outrage. In Delhi, the protest erupted outside Jama Masjid after the Friday prayers with demands for the arrest of Nupur Sharma, who made the comments and was later suspended from the BJP.

 

People gathered in large numbers to protest against inflammatory remarks by Nupur Sharma and expelled leader Naveen Jindal. The Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid said, "No call for protest given by Masjid."

"We don’t know who are the ones protesting. I think they belong to AIMIM or are Owaisi’s people. We made it clear that if they want to protest, they can, but we will not support them," he said.

Even though the BJP suspended the leaders who made inflammatory remarks, and Sharma also issued an apology, the protesters demanded her arrest.

In Kolkata, over 300 people turned up during namaaz with posters etc demanding the arrest of Nupur Sharma.

DCP Central District, Shweta Chauhan said, "Almost 1,500 people had gathered in Jama Masjid for Friday prayers. After the prayers, nearly 300 people came out and started to protest over inflammatory remarks by Nupur Sharma & Naveen Jindal."

Protests also broke out in UP’s Prayagrag where stone-pelting took place. In Moradabad, the police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the crowd.

Nupur Sharma was the Delhi University Students’ Union president before becoming an advocate, unsuccessfully contesting against AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal in the 2015 Delhi Assembly election and emerging as one of the more prominent BJP spokespersons.

During a TV debate recently on the ongoing Gyanvapi Masjid row, Sharma had made her remarks in response to “Muslims mocking the Hindu faith by making fun of the Shivling and calling it a fountain.” The police in Hyderabad, Pune, and Mumbai registered cases against her for hurting religious sentiments as both clashes (including in Kanpur) and protests for her arrest and also threats against her spiralled. Sharma withdrew her remarks. Jindal also deleted his tweet.
