Puducherry, Nov 05, 2021: A man and his son were charred to death after the firecrackers they were carrying on a scooter exploded. The incident was reported near the Puducherry-Villupuram border on Thursday when Diwali was being celebrated across the country.
The father, Kalainesan, and his seven-year-old son, Pradeep, were travelling to Koonimedu village on the Kottakuppam East Coast Road in Villupuram district on Thursday when the incident happened.
The two were riding on a two-wheeler with bundles of firecrackers, which burst into flames, killing both of them on the spot. A video of the incident went viral on social media.
The CCTV footage shows Kalainasan riding the scooter, while his son Pradeep sat on a bundle of firecrackers kept on the front side of the two-wheeler.
The video then shows the speeding vehicle exploding, killing the boy and his father on the spot.
Three other people were also injured in the incident. They were taken to the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry for treatment.
A lorry and two other two-wheelers were also damaged.
Villupuram District DIG Pandian reached the spot soon after the incident. Police said they have registered a case and are probing the matter.
